Selma review

Directed by: Ava DaVernay
Written by: Paul Webb
Cast: David Oyelowo, Carmen Ejogo

Movie starts, screen is black, and the familiar voice of Martin Luther king Jr rings out into the theatre, finally a image of him preparing to receive his Nobel peace prize, many miles away five girls talk about their hair moments later there’s an explosion. Fades to black. Now that’s a powerful way to start a movie. Selma chronicles Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965.

Selma was a very moving and emotional movie. I liked how unlike other Martin Luther King Jr biopics, this one focuses on 1 of the many issues that African Americans faced at that time. Their focus and fight was the right to vote, which today is often taken for granted. Makes you appreciate how easy it is to registering too vote is. Although the issues of voting was the point of the whole movie, I got to see Martin and Coretta in a really personal way not seen before. We can see how this major cause put a strain on their relationship, not to mention the infidelity(shocker).

David and Carmen are splitting image of Martin and Coretta.

Overall, this movie is pretty good.
I give this movie: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
